Love the cooldown idea. Taking breaks to fix all the stuff piling up in the background while devs crank out features sounds great.
Another thing I wanted to add is that sometimes, you don't need sprints at all. You kind of mentioned it, but depending on your environment, a simple Kanban board might be all you need = especially if you're spinning off a new product branch that requires a lot of exploration.
Sprints, retros, and planning can slow things down when you just need to prioritize speed, especially if you're in a small team of fewer than five devs.
